  • For eight years Facebook, now Meta, has been the King of Social Media, it still is for most. The numbers say it's the most used and populated social media platform. It has 2.5 billion active monthly users.

    But popularity changes. Right now on Meta's heals in the race for attention, the digital marketing Nirvana, is TikTok! Over 2 billion downloads globally since 2020, TikTok will hit 1.5 billion monthly active users in 2022. Impressive!

    TikTok is still nowhere near Meta, but no doubt it's on the rise, and the new place where everyone wants to sell. It's the Gold Rush of the 2020s. Everyone is desperate to exploit TikTok for promoting their brands, products and services. TikTok is powerful competition for Meta. But will it depose FB, the king in the world of SM advertising?

    TikTok is winning in some demographics. In the first quarter of 2021, 36% of TikTok users were between 35 and 54 years old, compared to 26% in 2020. Attention is shifting, as TikTok is now getting soooo addictive. In 2021 a typical TikTok user spent close to 20 hours on average per month on the app. Same as the #1 in social media, Facebook. In four years, TikTok has grown fivefold. That is incredible and Meta is on a war footing on the back of this!

    Meta is in a battle against TikTok. Hearts, minds and attention spans of millennials are the prize. Post pandemic TikTok is winning, but Meta is on the counterattack. Virtual Coins is the new battle front. “Zuck bucks” are taking on TikTok's in-app coins, which in Q1 2022 users spent $840m on, up 40% on last year. This makes TikTok the most lucrative app in the world for in-app purchases. Wow!

    Meta's response? It's staying with Reels on FB and Instagram. Is it working? It's not slowing TikTok down that's for sure. In some markets FB has almost died with 18-24s on TikTok as FB, Instagram and WhatsApp combined.

    Is TikTok or Meta the winner?

    Truth, it depends!

    Meta's FB works well with older audiences but that is changing. That's what the numbers are saying. TikTok is catching up and is going to be their biggest competitor in the future. It is already winning on in-app spending. TikTok ads are more expensive. But in 2021 TikTok generated 235% more impressions than Facebook ads.

    Are TikTok ads better than Facebook?

    Difficult to say either way. Meta knows its target audience well, and does drive brand engagement. But TikTok's reach is bigger. It's only a matter of time before they catch up. Advertising on Tik Tok is powerful for engaging, connecting and presenting your brand.
